SPEAKERSSPEAKER 1:
BIO: Mafalda Sobral is a hepatobiliary and liver-kidney transplant surgeon at Curry Cabral Hospital in Lisbon (Portugal). She received M.D. and is undergoing PhD in Nova Medical School in Lisbon. Then started surgical training in Curry Cabral Hospital in Lisbon, Portugal and had additional abroad training in Paul Brousse Hospital in Paris and in São Paulo, Brasil. She is part of the Compagnon Hépato-biliaire Associé (Les Compagnons Hépato-Biliaires founded by Prof. Henri Bismuth). Her expertise is specifically in:
SPEAKER 2 Prof. Dieter Broering (Saudi Arabia)
Robotic approach in living donor liver transplantation donors “one size fits all?”
BIO: Prof. Dr. Dieter Broering, a global leaderin organ transplantation, serves as the Executive Director
of the Organ Transplant Centre of Excellence at King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research
Centre (KFSH&RC) and Professor of Surgery at Alfaisal University, Riyadh. Since 2010, he has
driven transformative advancements in transplantation, positioning Saudi Arabia as a global
pioneer in robotic transplant surgery. He graduated in Medicine from the University of Dusseldorf in 1992, became Board Certified in Surgery in Hamburg in 1997, earned his PhD in Surgery (Habilitation) at the University of Hamburg in 2004, and completed a second PhD in Clinical Hepatology at Semmelweis University, Budapest, in 2006. Prof. Broering served as Chairman of the Surgery Department at King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre (KFSH&RC) from October 2010 to August 2020. He was elected Fellow of the American College of Surgeons in 2018 and Honorary Fellow of the European Surgical Association in 2024. A world-renowned multi-organ transplant surgeon and an expert leader in Living Donor Liver Transplantation. Prof. Broering has pioneered numerous transplantation programs, innovated split liver transplantation, minimally invasive procedures, and robotic donor hepatectomy and nephrectomy. Under his leadership, KFSH&RC has performed over 1,600 robotic procedures and authoring more than 300 peer-reviewed publications. His leadership has not only advanced global standards in transplantation but also significantly enhanced patient outcomes and surgical techniques worldwide. Prof. Broering’s groundbreaking work has set global benchmarks in multi-organ transplantation, significantly advancing patient outcomes and surgical innovation worldwide. SPEAKER 3:Prof. Fabrizio Di Benedetto (Italy) Pros and cons of whole graft robotic transplant BIO: Born and raised in Catania, Fabrizio Di Benedetto had his surgical education in Milan, and started his academical career in Modena. In 2007 he joined the Master in Hepatic Pancreatic and Biliary Cancers (“Diplome d’Université”)Onco-surgical Strategies at Hopital Paul Brousse, Villejuif – France. Currently he is full professor of surgery at University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, where he directs the hepato-pancreato-biliary surgery and liver transplantation unit, being in charge of the kidney transplant program, and he is also Program Director of the General Surgery Residency Program at University of Modena. He started a prolific HPB robotic program in 2014, reaching important milestones like the first full robotic ALPPS for hepatocellular carcinoma and cholangiocarcinomaand counting nowadays over 300 HPB robotic procedures. The program was further enriched in 2019 with the introduction of kidney procurement for LDKT and robotic kidney transplant. Moreover, in 2024 were performed the first Italian cases of full robotic whole liver transplantation, currently one of the largest program worldwide with seven cases performed. He is Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, leader of the Pancreas Study Group of ISLS, participate in the Special Interest Group of ILTS “Advanced Techniques in Hepatobiliary Surgery”, and he is member of the board of the Italian registry of minimally invasive liver surgery (IgoMILS) and faculty of the School of Robotic Surgery in Grosseto (Italy). He obtained the European Surgical Association (ESA) membership in 2024. Robotic liver and pancreatic surgery, living donor liver transplant and transplant oncology are currently the field of research of Prof. Di Benedetto. He recently received an award from the Italian Society of Organ Transplantation (SITO) for the Robotic Donor Hepatectomy for Living Donor Liver Transplantation program. He contributed as panel chair to the first Consensus Conference on robotic HPB surgery in Paris (December 2023) and first Consensus Conference on robotic organ transplantation in Riyad (December 2024). SPEAKER 4:
Dr Adeel Kahn (US)
Future perspectives and health related costs of robotic transplantation
BIO: Dr. Kahn specializes in laparoscopic and robotic surgery of the liver, pancreas, and bile ducts (HPB), with a special interest in liver tumors (primary and metastatic), pancreatic cancer, cancer of the gallbladder and bile duct, gastric cancer, neuroendocrine tumors (including carcinoid), gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST), retroperitoneal sarcoma, and benign hepatobiliary and pancreatic conditions. He is affiliated with Barnes-Jewish Hospital and St. Louis Children’s Hospital.
